The Merl Campground is the NP camp for the Ubirr area of Kakadu and is a great shady area with toilets and solar-heated showers which are extremely effective. The peak of visitors has started to drop off so the campground was fairly quiet. A walking path takes you to the well known Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River; here the road crosses the river to the further reaches of East Arnhem (permit only) and the crocs gather at high tide for the Barramundi that appear.
From the crossing carpark is a small walking trail around the river bank area downstream from the crossing, the photos here follow the sequence of Campground, walk to the crossing, Cahills Crossing, Mangarre Walk
