Elsey National Park includes the Bitter Springs and Mataranka thermal springs and a large tract of the country along the Roper River system. We took a drive to the Campground area which is as far as you can go, and about 20km from Mataranka. Along the way we stopped at the site of the Aboriginal Army Camp and strolled the 2km loop walk.
From there to the end and the Campground, the area there is known as 12 Mile Yards and we walked a couple of km downstream as that part of the river walk was open.
On the way back we also stopped at the Four Mile but the walk both ways from there was still closed.
